Mudavaattu Kizhangu: The Rare Tamil Tuber Known as “Vegetarian Goat Leg”
There is a tuber you will not find in a supermarket, but which your grandparents knew well — Mudavaattu Kizhangu. Known as the “vegetarian goat leg,” it is one of Tamil Nadu's rarer roots. Here is what it is, how it has traditionally been used, and how to make it at home.
What is Mudavaattu Kizhangu?
Mudavaattu Kizhangu is a rare tuber found in the Western Ghats. It is seasonal, and it does not turn up easily in shops — it is generally gathered by people living in the hill villages.
Boiled properly, it gives the same thick, full-bodied consistency you get from a goat leg soup. That is exactly where the name “vegetarian goat leg” comes from, and why it has long been a good option for vegetarian households.
Why did our elders use it?
In Tamil Nadu's villages this tuber has traditionally been used in connection with joint comfort and bone strength. It also appears in Siddha texts.
Older family members would drink this soup during the rainy season, when joint aches tend to get worse. That is a traditional practice — not a medical treatment.
What the lab found
Tradition is one thing. But what do the numbers say? Veetoon's Mudavaattu Kizhangu products are tested at an NABL-accredited laboratory. The results:
- Calcium — 2596 mg per 100 g. That is a notable figure. Calcium is needed for the normal maintenance of bones and teeth.
- Potassium — 495 mg per 100 g.
- Dietary fibre — 8.42 g per 100 g. Which is what gives you that full feeling.
